Construction machines do a lot – they are indispensable on building sites or in gardening and landscaping. Construction machinery without particle filters is no longer permitted in many public tenders and is not only harmful to the environment, but also to the health of workers.

Retrofitting particulate filters offers an economically interesting and sustainable alternative to decommissioning machines without diesel particulate filters (DPF).

The advantages of the HJS sintered metal filter (SMF®) at a glance:

  • HJS Sintered Metal SMF® – designed for harsh construction environments
  • Housing and filter module made of stainless steel
  • Simple and cost-effective installation
  • Easy cleaning at the building yard – no downtime
  • TRGS & VERT compliant

HJS offers two basic solutions based on an extensive modular system

SMF®-ER: Simple solution for small motors up to 80 KW

The robust SMF®-ER has a particularly simple design. Analog pressure monitoring indicates the need for cleaning. Cleaning is easy with a high-pressure cleaner – it is not necessary to send in the filter.

SMF®-CRT: Simple solution for larger motors from 80 KW

The modular SMF®-CRT systems do not require any additional regeneration aids, additives or intervention in the engine management system. The HJS logger can be used to read off the current operating status and cleaning requirements of the filter system at any time.

We ask for your help

According to EU assessments, passenger cars with petrol engines are also an increasingly harmful source of emissions
if they are not fitted with a particulate filter. This applies in particular to
operation in city centers with high traffic volumes.
As part of the European funding project “AeroSolfd”, with HJS participation, the effectiveness of
particulate filters for gasoline vehicles is therefore to be proven in a fleet test. To this end, we are looking for
suitable petrol engines that are suitable for the installation and operation of a particulate filter test system.

For the purpose of installing the filter and a measuring device, you then make your vehicle available to us for 2 days
and drive with the filter installed for a period of 6 – 8 months in your normal driving operation. In the
best case scenario, your monthly mileage is more than 1,000 km. We will of course provide you with a free rental car for the workshop visit
.

Your support will be remunerated with a one-off payment of €820.00, which will be paid out at the end of the test.

Lhoist-Kalkwerk Hönnetal and HJS Emission Technology from Menden are working together on an industrial efficiency project. The aim is to save over 1,000 tons of CO2 per year and at the same time increase the output of waste heat recovery.

The Menden-based specialist for gas filtration, HJS Emission Technology, and Lhoist-Kalkwerk Hönnetal are working on a cooperation project in which a new type of technology is to be used that has not yet been used in the local lime industry.

Stefan Flügge, head of the Lhoist plant in Hönnetal, explains: “When we fire the limestone in our kilns, hot exhaust gases are also produced. We already use these to preheat the stones. However, we hope that the project will enable us to make further use of the residual energy contained in the kiln exhaust gases for additional heating and drying processes or for generating electricity. At the same time, electricity consumption at the exhaust gas blower will be reduced by more than 2,000 megawatt hours per year. This corresponds to an annual saving of more than 1,000 tons of CO2. We are delighted to have found a technology partner in the immediate vicinity in HJS.”

Limestone is heated up to 1200 degrees in kilns to produce quicklime. The raw material lime, which is indispensable for many industries, is only produced by burning. The technology offered by HJS is designed to make the resulting exhaust gases much more efficient to use. “Our sintered metal filters are significantly more efficient in hot gas filtration than the textile filters that have often been used to date. Less cooling air is required, the hot gases can be used directly for electricity and heat, we significantly reduce the required power consumption and also reduce CO2 emissions,” explains Hubertus Borgmeier, International Sales Manager at HJS.

Stefan Flügge: “We are working hard to constantly reduce our energy consumption and CO2 emissions. This project is a further step towards more climate-friendly lime production.” In a first step, parts of the exhaust gas will be routed through the new HJS system on a trial basis. This is because there is no technology on this large industrial scale yet. If the tests are successful, the project will be expanded in order to achieve the highest possible level of efficiency.

The hydrogen engine is ready to start. This clear signal was sent by the Hydrogen Engine Alliance as the organizer last Thursday and Friday at Hydrogen LIVE in Karlsruhe. 24 exhibitors, including HJS, showed the concentrated potential of this pioneering drive technology. The evening before, 500 interested visitors explored the exhibition grounds.

HJS, as a member of Allianz Wasserstoffmotor e.V., has presented its approach for an exhaust system specifically for H2 engines.

The H2-EAT system has been specially adapted to the operating behavior of the H2 engine and is also particularly compact. The low back pressure supports the engine in terms of consumption and performance characteristics.

Bernd Lindemann, CTO at HJS, summarized: “The event was a great success and showed in an impressive way how the various manufacturers are using their broad expertise to prepare the hydrogen engine for the rapid introduction of a CO2-free drive system. With its many years of experience in the development of exhaust systems, HJS is happy to make a significant contribution on the road to the hydrogen engine.

The hydrogen engine, which can already be used in the short term, is an integral and indispensable part of the technology mix required to achieve the ambitious EU climate targets, said Arnd Franz, CEO of Mahle, at the event.

Michael Theurer, State Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transport, also made a plea for technological openness. “We need climate-neutral drives on the road”. Openness to technology is crucial here. We don’t need hydrogen as champagne, but as table water for the drives of the future”.

Technology for filtration and separation in industrial applications

For the second time in a row, the Sauerland-based filter specialist HJS presented its product portfolio for industrial applications at the FILTECH trade fair in Cologne. From February 14 to 16, HJS will be exhibiting at the world’s most important Conference for Filter and Separation Technology will focus on industrial solutions for the sintered metal filter medium.

The SMF® sintered metal filter technology patented by HJS has been used for decades to filter exhaust gases from combustion engines. Numerous manufacturers of vehicles and construction machinery rely on filtration with HJS technology and thus achieve the strictest requirements for particle reduction.

SMF® is a mechanically and thermally highly stable filter medium that HJS can produce in a similar way to paper or synthetic filter media, either pleated or as a continuous belt. In terms of temperature resistance, it is ideally suited for industrial processes. That’s why HJS is exhibiting at FILTECH in Cologne for the second time in a row, to present the versatile application possibilities of SMF® outside of engine exhaust gas cleaning.

“Sintered metal filters offer great potential for optimization within existing production processes in terms of reducing energy consumption,” explains HJS Sales Manager Hubertus Borgmeier. One of these is hot gas filtration: many industrial manufacturing processes produce emissions with high dust loads at temperatures of up to 800 °C. Current and future environmental standards stipulate efficient filtration, which is only possible with conventional textile bag filters at the expense of energy-intensive cooling. Sintered metal, on the other hand, dedusts hot gases directly and allows their thermal energy to be used for electricity or heat. This recovery can drastically reduce production-related CO2 emissions.

The HJS team is looking forward to a constructive exchange at stand D22 and welcomes all interested parties to FILTECH 2023.
